Learning how to write SEO friendly articles is the key to helping your blog posts to rank!    Google and other search engines are continually updating their algorithms (and artificial intelligence systems) to help them to find the best articles (source).

Sneaky black hat SEO techniques are unethical and could get you booted from the top results. Plus, the old-style so-called white-hat SEO techniques are becoming less effective as Google judges content on the web by how users interact with it.

Over time articles that are most helpful to the reader and inherently SEO friendly will continue to rank at the top.

Of course, the most coveted position is ranking number one in a Google search. (Actuality ranking number zero or the snippet can be even better than number one).

First, here is an overview of writing SEO friendly blog posts that Google will love.

You likely have already heard of SEO, if you are here to read about how to write SEO friendly blog posts.

What is SEO blogging?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Basically, this is the strategy of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your blog post through organic search engine results.

In other words, you want a search engine to show your article when someone is looking for that information on the internet.

This leads to more free traffic. Yay!

There are many different factors that search engines use to figure out which article to show when somebody types a question or phrase in the search bar (source).

Search engines use several metrics to measure the quality of content. (Not to mention these metrics are constantly updated and revised).

Keywords, blog length, expert knowledge, and uniqueness are some of the factors that help determine the credibility of a blog post. Copywriters and businesses spend hours to give their blog posts a perfect shape.

Write SEO friendly articles that readers, Google and Search Engines Love

To maintain the popularity of your blog, you need to create a blog post that mainly focuses on a subject that interests people.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) friendly articles are created to get more visitors from search engines. The articles are written on the keywords in phrases or questions that people are currently searching for.

The first step is planning phase and keyword research. Before you even start writing you need to make sure that your time and efforts with pay off with a blog post that drives organic traffic.

By organic traffic, I mean, your readers are finding your content through searching on Google or other search engines. That is, what are they typing in the search bar to answer the questions that they have.

Another way to obtain organic traffic, is when someone asks their mobile device such as Siri, a verbal question. Think of all the people who thing of a question, reach for their phone and say “hey Siri, what is ….” Even my kids do this all the time.

Start with the Planning Phase

To write the best SEO friendly blog post structure for an online business, you must start planning before you get paper and pen (in this case, your laptop or desktop).   Crafting your blog content according to a plan yields better results than the content you will create off hand.

Consider in Demand Topics

You should be writing about in demand topics, otherwise your efforts may be wasted on a ghost town. Thinking of reader’s pain points can be really helpful here.  

Before you start creating your blog post, start by thinking what the best topic to write. Remember the content is for the conversion of interent readers to loyal customers. 

Most content writers or bloggers want to write about the content they are interested in. This is different because, from a reader’s point of view, he may not like it or may not get engaged. 

The best way to find topics is to take your audience’s pain points into consideration.

For example, you can try solving the problem they are facing such as

  • How they can achieve more in life
  • How they can easily fix their roof
  • What to do if their dog gets bitten by a rattlesnake
  • What is the best wine to serve to impress visitors from Italy

Keyword Research

One main part of the search engines’ algorithm is to match keywords and phrases between a blog post and the search bar. Therefore, your job will be to figure out the words and phrases that people use when searching for information in your article.

Long-tail keywords are short phrases with four or more keywords that people search for on the Internet. To have a better chance at ranking in the search engine results page aim for finding and addressing long-tail keywords.

One way to do this is just to start typing the phrase or keywords into Google and see what Iit auto-suggest.  This auto-suggest feature will show you what people frequently typed into the search bar.

Additionally, many free and paid tools are available to research these keywords.  Some popular tools are SEMRUsh, Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, and Long Tail Pro. 

In fact, Ubersuggest is one of my favorite free tools for finding keywords.

Create an Outline with Headings

Once you have completed your research, the next step in an SEO friendly blog post is to write an outline.

Writing an outline is crucial to keep you on track so you don’t wander. You want a helpful concise article that your reader and Google will love.

The outline should contain sections for an introduction, main body, and conclusion. Break up the main body of the article with headings and subheadings.

Each main H1 heading should be followed by an H2 and H3 heading. Not every article needs down to H3 and H4 headings but they do need to go in the correct order.

Using short phrases with keywords and relevant information in your headings will help search engines understand the most important points of your content.

Also, nailing the headings and subheadings will help you win more snippets. This is a very top position where Google summarizes the information in the search.

Write the Blog Post

Once the outline is complete it’s time to go back and fill in the details of the blog post.   You should keep in mind both the reader and add SEO friendly content. (Don’t keyword stuff. Its awkward and the serach engines are wise to this old trick.)

Use the right conversion tone for your audience – When writing your blog post, try to be helpful and concise. Depending on your audience you can write friendly or professional.

For example, you can make your readers feel that they are having a good conversation with you. You can engage them by asking some questions and creating a joke.

The introduction is just a paragraph or two that leads the reader to read the rest of the article.  They got past the title and chose to read more.  So now is your chance to convince them to read more. 

For SEO purposes, the introduction needs to not only highlight the main ideas, but should include the keywords that you are targeting in the article.

These short paragraphs tell both the reader and the search engines what the rest of your blog post is about.

Main Body

The body of your article will already be divided by headings and subheadings (if you completed the first steps).  Your SEO friendly content should really shine here. 

The golden rule used in writing blog posts for SEO is to write clear, short paragraphs that support each of your headings or bullet points.

Keep your sentences within the paragraphs short and direct also. Short sentences allow the reader to stay engaged longer. Long sentences could lose the reader’s attention causing them to click away. (Remember egnagement is a key indicator to Google about the quality of your content)

Throughout your article write naturally but continue to to stay focused on writing content related to the your keywords and similar or related keywords.

When it comes to keyword optimization, you don’t need to keep repeating the same words over and over. You can interchange the related ideas and similar keywords to optimize your content.

 For example

 When writing an article dealing with training cat or how to train your cat you can write, ” Cat training tricks”.

Search engines look first to look for the title, and you would not see an article about other topics like car insurance. You would see that related terms like “cat habits” or “cat behavior” will also be identified.

Don’t forget to credit other authors for the information that you gathered during your research phase.  Links to other experts, as well as links to your own information, adds credibility (and responsibility) to your writing.   

Strong Conclusion 

When writing a blog post conclusion, you need to summarize the main points of what you have written.  This means taking the chance to reiterate the subject matter that you are addressing with keywords and phrases. 

You want to do this in a natural non-spammy way because the search engines are getting smarter and readers are already wise. 

Definitely, highlight the main point in the articles. Some people will only read the introduction and conclusion. A quality conclusion could convince them the rest of the post is worth reading. At least you can, remind your readers about the value of the blog post and what to take away.

Call to Action

Finally, the call to action. I separated out the call to action because it is so important to your online business.

In addition, don’t forget the SEO value of this section. Remember, engagement is a key indicator to Google and other search engines of the value of your content.

This is your chance at a final sales pitch with your business.  Do you want them to engage by commenting, read more articles on your blog, share the information on social media, or become a customer? 

Tell the reader what to next after getting the valuable information that you shared with them.

For example 

You can write, “Read more about this topic in my article on—” or “If you enjoyed this article please share it” or commentnt below with questions”

How Long Should a Blog Article be for SEO?

Most seasoned and starting bloggers always ask, how long should a blog post be?

Generally, it’s more about how many words it takes to create exciting and relevant information.

As a rule of thumb an article should be more than 600 words with the best length being over 1,000 words.   Shoot to 1,000 to 1,500 words for articles with simple answers to questions, shareable content and straightforward information. 

Search engines tend to favor articles that are very in depth at more than 2,000 words.  These longer more in depth articles take longer to write and have much more authority to rank in Google.  

Neil Patel, known for his long form content, said that 3,000+ word blog posts get more traffic.   

What to do Before Hitting Publish to Ensure Good SEO Practices?

Add Relevant Images to Your Article

Images add interest, drive home your point and add life to your blog post.  Plus images used correctly are good for SEO. 

Yoast suggests using original images, preferably ones that you have taken yourself. If all else fails, you can use stock images that are available for free or cost at different websites. 

Additionally, you can make your own original data tables, figures, graphs and flow charts on your computer or with websites such as Canva.   Although these files are created in various formats, save them in JPEG or PNG. 

Once you have created or obtained the images, use the image optimization tools to to load them to your blog.    Various plugins are available if you do not have a tool with your theme.

My theme actually has a tool but I am using ShortPixel for this blog. It is a freemium image optimization plugin. I love it. I have used other plugins but this is the best I have used.

Once the images are loaded, don’t forget to add captions and alt text.  These options will be available in the sidebar for Gutenberg or image information with your theme. 

Add the Categories and Tags

Most people either don’t know categories and tags exist or overuse tags and confuse everyone including the search engines.

These are important elements of a website to keep the blog posts organized.

Categories should be limited to 3 or 4 for all the content on the website. Tags (within categories), mostly known as keywords, are short phrases highly related to the subject of the article that helps categorize your content. 

For example: In keeping with your cat training topic, you can write an article with tags like “cat training tips” or “training your aggressive cat.”

They contribute to the relevance of article subject and help you to organize and search your content.

But tags can be tricky.

Be careful not to overdo the tags. Multiple tags across many different posts might cause Google to label these articles as duplicate content.


You should proofread your words after you are done writing the post but you will need another round of proofreading. 

(I hesitate to tell you this because you will surely find errors in my writing)

Before posting anything, ensure you have proofread your article. Make sure the keywords are at the right place, spelling and grammar are collect, and you have expressed the ideas you wanted. 

My very first blog posts were a mess because I did not proofread and did not use any tools to help. Now I am using a free grammar and spelling tool called Grammarly. (That’s an affiliate link because it is a fremium tool but I just use the free version of Grammarly)

Check your content on both desktop and mobile view.  You want to make sure the post looks good for readers on a phone or tablet.  In fact, I jsy got a notice from Google that a page of mine on another blog was not loading in mobile correctly. Ouch.

This step takes a few minutes to make the difference.

Double Check the Links

Hopefully, you added links within the text referencing other experts and your own content. Just before getting published make sure internal and external links work.  Broken links frustrate readers and effect your SEO.  

Search engines will find your content more valuable with links to other authoritative sites and are working. 

Final Thoughts

Creating an SEO friendly article will help you increase traffic to your website and build a good relationship with your readers.  Organic traffic is beneficial in growing your business online in the long run.

Social Media such as Pinterest and FaceBook take continuous energy and input on your part to keep the readers visiting your blog.

However, an article that ranks highly in the search engine results is a long term asset to your business.  If written well with good techniques your article will survive all the algorithm changes over time.
